Tarnish vs Toning

Hey all, I'm confused. :confused_m:

Can someone set me straight on this subject.

Is tarnish really the same as toning?

When is it desirable vs. detrimental to the value of a silver coin?

Thanks.

Yes, they are one in the same. As far as what is desirable, and what adds value to the coin, that is subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If a coin gets tarnished and someone thinks it gives the coin great eye appeal then he or she will probably pay more for that coin than if the coin didn't look quite as nicely toned. For myself, I like my circulated copper coins with a nice, even, light brown tone. As for circulated silver coins, many people think "rainbow toning" looks the prettiest but I prefer a dull, dark hue. Again, it's a matter of personal opinion.

What Gopher said! To add on, if you think the toning is beautiful, others will think it also. Conversely, if you do not like it, others will agree. Only buy toned coins that you think are beautiful, NOT because they are toned.

Rainbow toning is beautiful, but it is too easily manufactured. I prefer tabbed toning.

Below are some examples of toned coins, mostly from early 20th century commemorative coins.

How do you tone a silver coin? I've heard you put in in an envelope and let it sit in the sun for a few months, is that right?

Try a few years. I have several coins that are in manilla envelopes toning, and others that are surrounded by paper towels. some people put them in velvet bags, special small coin boxes. . .etc.

The different chemicals will react differently to the metals.

There are many ways to cheat, most are detectable, a few are not. Here is a book from Amazon.com talking about the toning of coins. This is a book that is better borrowed than bought.

It's called toning if you like the looks of it. It's called tarnish if you don't.
